Yankees top prospect Jesus Montero will miss the remainder of Scranton/Wilkes Barre’s playoff series against Columbus after undergoing a procedure on his ankle Wednesday night.
The heavily-hyped catcher suffered a bone bruise and decided to have the discoloring scraped out. The injury is not considered serious and Montero could possibly return if the Yankees Triple-A affiliate can get past Columbus in the best-of-five International League series, which they trail 1-0.
Montero, who was nearly traded to the Mariners for Cliff Lee in July, batted .289 with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs this season.

TORONTO -- Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton played a light game of catch before Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jays, the first step toward returning to action for baseball’s leading hitter.
Hamilton, whose .361 average is the highest in the majors, hasn’t played since bruising his ribs after crashing into the outfield wall in Minnesota last Saturday. There is still no timetable for his return.
Hamilton has a team-high 31 homers and 97 RBIs. He threw with shortstop Elvis Andrus, out since Saturday with a sore right hamstring. Andrus is expected to play Friday when Texas returns home to face the Yankees.
Left-hander Cliff Lee, who skipped his start this week with a sore back, will pitch next on Sunday against righty Dustin Moseley.

Jorge Posada does not have a concussion and he could be back in the Yankees' lineup any time.
Posada did not play in
Wednesday's 3-2 Yankees' victory over the Oriolesbecause he was suffering concussion symptoms. The Yankees sent him to New York-Presbyterian during the game to get tests, which were negative.
"Physicians have cleared Posada for competitive play and he is listed as day-to-day," the Yankees said in a statement.
Joe Girardi said Posada took a foul ball to the head in Tuesday night's game with the Orioles. After the game, Posada complained of feeling "foggy" and did not feel well. When he got to the ballpark Wednesday morning, he told Girardi he did not sleep well and still had a headache. After the Yankees' training staff conducted tests, they decided to send him to the hospital.
"Anytime you start talking about concussions, and we've seen a lot of these last a long time with players, there's concern," Girardi said.
Before the tests, Girardi was asked if he was worried Posada might miss the rest of the season.
"I don't necessarily think about the rest of the season," Girardi said. "I have contemplated that we might not have him for a little bit here. If that's the case, we've got to deal with it."

Relief isn’t on the way for the Yankees bullpen.
Joe Girardi said Wednesday that he does not expect to have Alfredo Aceves or Damaso Marte back in pinstripes this season. Aceves’ bad back has kept him out since May 8, while Marte been on the disabled list since early July with shoulder inflammation.
That means the Yankees will depend on Boone Logan as their only reliable lefty out of the bullpen.
Girardi said Aceves felt discomfort in his back last week after making a rehab start for Double-A Trenton. He is being evaluated by a bak specialist today, and may need surgery.
Marte is still trying to rehab the shoulder, but he may need surgery, too. Girardi said he is of the belief Marte will not be back.

Phil Hughes will have to wait his turn again.
Continuing to try to protect the 24-year-old All-Star’s inning count, the Yankees are postponing Hughes’ next start from Saturday against the Rangers to Wednesday versus the Rays.
“I wasn’t 100 percent sold that it was coming. I thought maybe I’d make all my starts and be somewhat around my innings count,” Hughes said. “But at the same time, I knew something might come up.”
This is the third time Hughes will be skipped, following hiatuses in June and July. He’s at 155 1/3 innings, with his cap believed to be 170-175. Hughes, who said he thinks this will be the final skip, has at least three more starts scheduled, potentially four, so how the starts and innings are managed could depend on how well or poorly he’s pitching.
As for Hughes’ replacement, the Yankees are off Thursday, so they’ll move A.J. Burnett to Saturday, meaning he’ll pitch on normal rest. Dustin Moseley will pitch Sunday.
Even though the Yankees are in a pennant race, they’re still choosing to rest Hughes.
“I don't know if there's ever an exact right time to skip a starter,” Joe Girardi said, “but the one thing you want is you want him to be able to do what he needs to do down the stretch.”
Hughes didn’t argue to stay in the rotation, saying, “They have a plan in mind and that’s kind of what they’re going to do. I don’t really have a say in it.”

Rangers pitcher Cliff Lee, who missed a start after taking a shot for back stiffness, is expected to start against the Yankees this weekend, the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports.
"They just don't know if it's going to be Saturday or Sunday,"
the report says.
The Rangers will be without MVP candidate Josh Hamilton. The outfielder injured his ribs last week.
Lee, the 2008 AL Cy Young winner, has not won since Aug. 6 at Oakland. He is 2-5 with a 4.69 ERA in 11 starts with the Rangers since they acquired him in six-player trade July 9 with the Mariners.

After playing two games since coming off the disabled list, Alex Rodriguez gets a day off and is not in the Yankees starting lineup tonight against the Orioles at the Stadium.
Joe Girardi said he wants to be cautious with the third baseman.
"Could I have run him through four days?" Girardi asked. "We could have thought about it, but I didn’t think it was a good idea."
The manager also did not want to sit him in Wednesdays finale with the Orioles with an off-day scheduled for Thursday. As much as Girardi wants to rest Rodriguez's calf, he also wants his cleanup hitter to find a rhythm at the plate.
Girardi said Rodriguez will play Wednesday.
Rodriguez said he begged Girardi to play, but could not win that argument.
"I wish I could play," Rodriguez said. :"I pleaded my case long and hard last night, again this morning, again this afternoon and I went 0-for-3."
Rodriguez on Monday reached 100 RBIsfor the 14th season, a major-league record.
Ramiro Pena is the third baseman.

Teixeira 1B
Cano 2B
